Magic's Pawn is one of the books that launched my life-long love of the Fantasy genre. I devoured the rest of the series, and almost everything she's put out since then. The wild magic is taking its toll on the land. Many Heralds and Herald-Mages have died fighting to preserve the peace. I first read this book in time I read it. I'd never heard of Elizabeth A. I won't review the books individually, but I will list the books in the order of publication (the order in which I recommend anyone read the books), but I will point out some of my favorites (and why they are favorites). Lynn when I saw her name on the list, and it was a surprise to me that Watchtower, the first book in her Chronicles of Tornor had won the World Fantasy Award in 1980. It's a strong narrative and a compelling story, and if you've read Magic's Pawn, the first novel in the trilogy, I'm going to suggest you try to ignore how angsty and whiny it is and try this one out because it's far better. I admit up front, I am a big Mercedes Lackey fan, ever since I read Magic's Pawn (The Last Herald-Mage Series, Book 1) . I reread Magic's Pawn (the first book of The Last Herald Mage Trilogy) by Mercedes Lackey every couple of years. When I looked for A series that I did enjoy which also dealt with the issues of gay relationships in a fantasy setting was Mercedes Lackey's Last Herald Mage trilogy, beginning with Magic's Pawn. It is the first in her “The Last Herald Mage” trilogy in her extensive Valdemar series. Magic's Promise / Mercedes Lackey New York : DAW Books, 1990 320 p.
